The Role of Cytokines in Diagnosing Autoinflammatory and Autoimmune Diseases

Posted on

A recent review published in the Journal of Leukocyte Biology looked to explore the role cytokines may have in autoinflammatory and autoimmune diseases. Biologics that target cytokine receptors, intracellular signaling, or specific cytokines have been shown to improve the symptoms of numerous chronic inflammatory diseases.

The review discusses the possibility of evaluating the cytokine profiles of this patient population through direct detection of cytokines in the plasma/serum or following ex vivo stimulation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells leading to the production of their cytokine secretome.

This has the potential to not only aide diagnosis but also guide treatment.
