Nearly two-thirds of COVID-positive kids with liver disease are hospitalized

Posted on

Although most healthy children who are infected with SARS-CoV2 will experience mild symptoms, children with underlying liver disease require most hospitalization, according to a poster presented at The Liver Meeting 2021.

In this multicenter retrospective observational cohort study, data from 76 patients <21 years of age with underlying liver disease and laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV2 spanning 6 countries, were included.

Approximately 35 patients presented with respiratory symptoms, 26 with fever, 17 with GI symptoms, 11 with constitutional symptoms, and 16 were asymptomatic.

In nearly 30 patients, hospitalization was required, with nearly 20 patients requiring treatment in the ICU. An additional 27 patients needed outpatient care. The majority (87%) of patients recovered, with 9% still active. Four percent of the patients included died.

“Children with underlying liver disease infected with SARSCoV2 need close monitoring due to an increased risk of liver-related complications and death,” the authors wrote.
