Long-term supplementation with vitamin D3 does not prevent depression adults, according to a large study.

In this randomized clinical trial, 18 353 adults aged 50 years or older without depression or clinically relevant depressive symptoms at baseline, were treated with either vitamin D3 or placebo for a median treatment duration of 5.3 years.

There was no significant difference in risk of depression or clinically relevant depressive symptoms between those taking vitamin D3 versus placebo. There were no significant differences between groups in depression incidence or recurrence or for change in mood scores over time.
