Can cryobiopsies diagnostic yield be increased in patients with ILD?

Posted on September 17, 2021

Using an electromagnetic navigation system when performing cryobiopsies in patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILD) is feasible and has the potential to increase diagnostic yield.

Electromagnetic navigation bronchoscopy and cryobiopsies using the navigation system, superDimension (SD), were performed on 18 patients in general anesthesia, although 5 patients were excluded in part due to technical difficulties.

In 23% of cases, pneumothorax was detected. Mild hemorrhage and moderate hemorrhage were seen in 8% and 46%, respectively.

In 85% of patients, the biopsies contributed to diagnosis.

The authors concluded that larger studies are needed to evaluate potential diagnostic advantages and complications.
