Multi-organ failure associated with hospital mortality in patients with ILD

Posted on

A substantial number of patients with interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) hospitalized in the ICU and placed on invasive mechanical ventilation are discharged from the hospital alive, according to a study.

In this retrospective study of 196 patients with ILD admitted to the ICU during the study period, mortality was 55%. Invasive mechanical ventilation was required in 55% (n = 108) of patients, of which 20% (n = 21) were discharged alive from hospital. Acute exacerbation of ILD and multi-organ failure were highly associated with hospital mortality.

A total of 70 patients (36%) were still alive 2 years after ICU admission.

The authors concluded that “Multi-organ failure could lead to major ethical concerns.”
