Lupus Nephritis

Complete response definition impacts clinical judgment in lupus nephritis

Posted on

Different complete remission criteria in children with proliferative lupus nephritis influences when remission is determined, according to a study.

In this study, data from 161 children with proliferative lupus nephritis underwent induction therapy of mycophenolate mofetil (MMF; n = 27) or cyclophosphamide (CYC; n = 134). Different criteria dramatically influenced complete remission rates, with CR rates in the MMF group ranging from 18.5% to 74.1% and rates in the CYC group ranging from 16.4% to 73.9%.

The authors also noted that “comparison between the 2 drugs in induction treatment under different criteria showed an opposite trend in efficacy.” Urinary protein and urinary red blood cells were factors that led to disagreement.
