Review of Iatrogenic Ophthalmic Artery Occlusion

A new study sought to provide pathogenic mechanisms, treatment methods, prognosis and prevention strategies for iatrogenic ophthalmic artery occlusion (IOAO), a rare disease that can cause permanent vision loss. IOAO is often the result of cosmetic facial filler injection, although intravascular procedures, intravitreal gas or drug injection, retrobulbar anesthesia, intraarterial chemotherapy in retinoblastoma are other medical etiologies.

All available case reports on IOAO were classified according to their mechanisms of pathogenesis, and treatment options and responses were summarized. Various sporadic cases of IOAO were categorized as intravascular event, orbital compartment syndrome, or increased intraocular pressure. Embolic IOAO was classified according to the pathway of embolic movement (retrograde pathway, anterograde pathway, pathway through collateral channels).

The authors hope this study will direct future research.
