Cognitive impairment in asthma patients linked to age, duration of condition

Posted on

Cognitive impairment is often found in patients with asthma and is more common in older adults and those with lower lung function and longer asthma duration, according to a study.

In this retrospective study, 202 adult patients with asthma had cognitive function assessed.

Nearly half (44.1%) of patients included had cognitive impairment, most of whom (72.9%) were 65 years of age or older. Montreal Cognitive Assessment test scores had significant differences according to age and lung function, but not asthma control. Cognitive impairment was significantly associated with age, educational status, and asthma duration.
